Ovarian Cystectomy
Ovarian cysts are common and usually due to hormonal
effects or benign
tumours. They may be found quite coincidentally or be noticed
as a lump in
the lower abdomen. The exact nature of an ovarian cyst is
often apparent on
ultrasound scan.
Should an ovarian cyst need to be removed this
is done either laparoscopically
or at open operation, but almost always under a general anaesthetic.
With a laparoscopic procedure there may only
be a Day Case (admission to
and discharge from hospital on the same day) admission with
return to work
very quickly. Open surgery necessitates admission for three
or four nights and
return to work is possible within a few weeks. As with other
operations involving general anaesthesia driving should be
avoided for at least 48 hours (longer
with open surgery). After open surgery the exact period without
driving should be
agreed with your car insurance company.
Mr Thonet can discuss the exact nature
of your treatment, including procedure
details, recovery times and any possible side-effects at a
consultation. This will reflect your exact circumstances and
needs. The information included here is provided for general
guidance only.
