Loop Diathermy
Loop diathermy is the removal of an area of abnormal cells in the cervix. It is
the normal course of action if a colposcopy confirms the need for active treatment .

There are two methods of loop diathermy:

1. LETZ - LETZ: Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone is used to remove
the whole of the abnormal area intact. A large majority of LETZ procedures are performed in the outpatient clinic under local anaesthetic although the procedure
can be carried out under a short general anaesthetic if requested. A general anaesthetic necessitates a brief Day Case (admitted and discharged from
hospital on the same day) admission to hospital.

2. Cone biopsy - This is a very similar procedure to LETZ and can also often be performed in the outpatient clinic under local anaesthetic. Should the area which needs to be removed be more extensive, it may be preferable to perform cone
biopsy under a short general anaesthetic as a Day Case, involving a few hours
stay in hospital. A general anaesthetic may also be used on patient request.

Loop diathermy is usually carried out just after a period, or at any time in the
cycle in women who are on oral contraception. Ideally you should avoid driving immediately after the procedure and avoid sexual intercourse for approximately
three weeks while the cervix heals. A follow-up appointment is normally made
to see Mr Thonet some two weeks after the treatment, to discuss the laboratory
report and any further action that may be necessary. Mr Thonet will usually
perform a further colposcopy and another cervical smear no earlier than six
months later.

Loop diathermy procedures do not have any significant effect on fertility, the
ability to carry a pregnancy to term or to have a normal vaginal delivery.

Mr Thonet can discuss the exact nature of your treatment, including procedure
details, recovery times and any possible side-effects at a consultation. This will reflect your exact circumstances and needs. The information included here is provided for general guidance only.
