Fertility
Pre-conception advice is often requested by a couple prior
to or trying for a
baby and can be very informative, especially if there are
worries concerning
past or present medical history.
Many potential problems can be averted after a careful study
of your family
history, and taking some simple tests. Advice regarding dietary
supplements
such as folic acid can also be discussed, along with relevant
tests for screening
and diagnosis of Down’s Syndrome and other conditions.
Where there have already been problems conceiving, Mr Thonet
believes
further tests are appropriate as soon as a couple become worried,
rather than waiting for any arbitrary length of time. This
latter approach tends only to
increase stress and is immediately counterproductive.
Mr Thonet is able to advise a series of quick and simple
tests to assess
ovulation and male fertility. Initial treatment may be started
without any delay
and this active approach may be effective very quickly. Further
investigation,
including laparoscopy
and hysteroscopy,
to confirm the fallopian tubes are
healthy and open and the uterine cavity is normal, may also
be arranged.
Mr Thonet feels that this simple initial approach is preferable
to the increasingly common advice that IVF (‘test tube’)
treatment is immediately needed.
IVF is readily available should there be a clear indication
that it is required.
