Diagnostic Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is the introduction of a telescope into the abdominal
cavity
through a very small incision in the lower aspect of the navel.
This is performed
in order to assess numerous gynaecological problems especially
those involving pelvic discomfort, pain associated with sexual
intercourse (dyspareunia), painful periods (dysmenorrhoea)
and fertility problems.
The procedure is almost always performed as
a Day Case (admitted and
discharged from hospital on the same day) under a short general
anaesthetic.
You should avoid driving for at least 48 hours after the procedure.
There is
inevitably some minor discomfort for a few days after laparoscopy
but this is
easily treated with mild analgesics e.g. paracetamol. Generally
laparoscopy will involve a few days off work but Mr Thonet
can give more specific advice
depending on your circumstances.
It is best to schedule a laparoscopy for shortly
after a period but the exact timing
can be discussed with Mr Thonet at your consultation appointment.
Where there have been fertility problems laparoscopy
is frequently combined
with hysteroscopy.
Mr Thonet can discuss the exact nature
of your treatment, including procedure
details, recovery times and any possible side-effects at a
consultation. This will reflect your exact circumstances and
needs. The information included here is provided for general
guidance only.
