Cervical Smear
Mr Thonet is sometimes asked to see women where there have
been
problems obtaining a satisfactory cervical smear, possibly
due to contact-bleeding
or infection. These problems are often resolved very quickly
and without any
serious medical implications, but they can cause anxiety and
stress.
Mr Thonet employs the ‘thin prep’ liquid based
cytology method which also
allows testing for human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and
Chlamydia testing.
HPV is very often the cause of abnormal cervical smears.
Liquid based cytology also benefits from fewer smears being
rejected as
inadequate for assessment. The results of a smear test are
generally available
in about ten days. In general Mr Thonet will write to you
when the result is available and give advice on any further
action needed and the recommended timing of a
future cervical smear.
Mr Thonet can discuss the exact nature of your treatment,
including procedure
details, recovery times and any possible side-effects at a
consultation. This will reflect your exact circumstances and
needs. The information included here is provided for general
guidance only.
