Robert Thonet is one of the most experienced
gynaecologists practicing in greater London today.
After studying medicine at King’s College, London
and Westminster Medical School Robert Thonet
qualified in 1971. After an initial gynaecology post,
he gained wider general surgical experience
before becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of
Surgeons (FRCS) in both Edinburgh and London
in 1977.
He then began further specialist training in obstetrics and
gynaecology at
Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital, Chelsea Hospital
for Women and in Cambridge, obtaining Membership of the Royal
College of Obstetricians
and Gynaecologists in 1979.
In 1986, having been Senior Registrar at Manchester and Oldham
(where
the first IVF baby was born), Robert was appointed Consultant
Obstetrician
and Gynaecologist at Queen Mary’s University Hospital.
It was here, in 1989,
that he founded the Assisted Conception Unit, one of the first
and largest
such units in South East England, after several years interest
in fertility
problems. In 1991, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College
of
Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG).
Robert Thonet is a member of the British Society for Colposcopy
and
Cervical Pathology (BSCCP), the British Fertility Society
(BFS) and the British Menopause Society (BMS).
